I think I drove my teachers crazy by asking “why?”.

Most animals in the animal kingdom live by instinct. Man is the only one, who, because of his intellect and reason, also free will, can go against his instincts. For instance, not drinking for the alcoholic, because his genes and his instinct drive him to drink, goes against his nature. It’s not natural for him or her to live a sober life. Yet millions of us are living a sober life, in spite of our natures.

We’re told Nature abhors a vacuum. So too with suicide, because suicide creates a vacuum in the lives of others. When alcohol drove me insane, I was in a state of despair. I felt there was no hope for me and I wanted to kill myself. I had no idea that there was an answer or a solution to what was wrong with me.

Actually, according to Nature and my nature, I was doing what I should. But I was also getting ready to create a vacuum. And that’s exactly where the solution the program offers came in. The beginning was an intervention from an unlikely source. The bartender reached across the bar and grabbed my wrist and asked if he could help. Imagine. And he got that help, another man, a medic, with whom I drank.

The medic had met a man the day before, who was sober through AA, who had questioned him about his drinking. He smelled it on him. The medic introduced me to the possibility of the program. That gave me hope. Maybe there was a way out of the hold alcohol had on me.

Not only did I find safety and but I also found a new way of life. A spiritual solution, which changed my nature. I found in here a higher power, who, as described in the Second Step, could and did restore me to sanity.

I was sitting outside, looking at the woods behind us, and just watching nature at work. I watched the birds, the hawks, the other animals out there doing what Nature intended them to do. And I thought about my nature, the nature of an alcoholic, which is to always take a drink. Then I thought about what happened to change my nature; the Program. I will ever be grateful to the God of my understanding, and the people in this program, who showed me the way out of the clutches of alcohol and into a sober life.

Something came to mind today about Nature.
