I had to stop and laugh today, when a friend and I were talking about this. I really don’t know. I do know that my old sponsor, who had about forty years when he died would have done the same thing I did. His widow, who was 90 and almost 60 years sober, when she passed away, would have reacted the same way. I know because I kept in touch with her until the end. Makes me grateful.

We were talking about the time each of us has in this program and just where we ought to be at the time we have in. I know for my part that it took time to arrive where I am right now. All I know is that I understand that I will never stop learning until my sobriety is over. That could be the end of my life or the next time I might get drunk. I hope it’s the first. I never ever want to drink ever again. I hope that I will stay sober a day at a time, until the end.

I know that all I ever want in this program is to stay sober this day. It’s really all I need, when I stop and think about it. Hopefully I am where I am supposed to be right now. I know all of this is dependent on my Higher Power and my commitment to stay sober today. All I ever have is today.

In fact I am amazed at all the time I have lived a sober life. To me it’s a miracle. I look back and think of what happened at the end of my drinking alcohol and know that I almost ended my life. All I know was that I was given hope and that brought about my surrender to my being powerless over alcohol. That brought about my entrance into this program. A new freedom.

Somehow with the help of others and the power and strength I was given through the spiritual life I started to live in this program I began to change from the person I dragged into these rooms. I began to learn how to live an entirely different way of life. A better and happier way of life. I finally found peace of mind and heart. Like the BB said, I found a new freedom and a new happiness. And so much more.

Not perfect, that’s for sure. But I know I will never be a saint. I still stumble and bumble in here over my faults, my defects. But like my sponsor told me to pick myself up and dust myself off and to keep on keeping on. As long as I don’t drink and am willing to keep moving forward I know I have a chance to continue to stay sober…a day at a time.

Ever so grateful.

What I do know is that time takes time. Nothing happens over night. I learned that a long long time ago. Like I said, I hope I never stop learning.

How long does it take to reach a point in sobriety where we think we know all we need to know?
