Today’s meeting was helpful to an awful lot of members in here. It was almost the essence of the Fifth Tradition and the Twelfth Step. That’s because of the funeral this morning of one of our old members.
What was talked about over and over again was the influence this man had on so many alcoholics coming into this program. His ability to talk to the new person and his example of what this program is about. I had to know that this had a great deal of influence on everyone in this room today.
It was definitely a reminder to me of why I am here. What it is I’m supposed to be doing on a daily basis. Pretty much what my old sponsor promoted in my life. How I had to change and what I was supposed to do to carry the AA message to the alcoholic, who still suffers.
It’s not that I or others forget what we’re supposed to be doing, but the example of people, like this man, are the inspiration we need to keep us on the road to grow along spiritual lines and to help others like ourselves. Never want to forget that.
Anyway, I had to stop and think about this today. It was a reminder to me that I am here to stay sober a day at a time, and that I need to help others do what myself and alcoholics like us are doing to stay sober. Makes me grateful to have known people like this. A gift I think we all need. Thanks.
