One old timer, a man over ninety with over 40 yrs. in, said today that he didn’t know how well he was doing in the program, but that he hadn’t drank in all these years and didn’t want to drink. He said expressed exactly how I feel and think. I don’t really know how I’m doing, but I know I haven’t taken a drink in all these years and don’t want to drink again.
The truth is that the longer I stay sober the dumber I get. I know less and less as time goes on. I can tell you my experiences with this program, but I sure don’t have a clue how this program works. I know why it works. It works because I do what everyone else does, who want to stay sober.
I heard another man, who has been around a while, talk about the power of prayer. He, like a lot of us, prayed his way into this program. He prayed to stop drinking and he did. I did the same thing. He said he prayed everyday to do God’s will for him and to ask for help. If we’re sober, I believe we all do…if we want to stay sober.
All in all, it makes for a simple program. All I have to do is the simple tasks laid out for me and it works. The troubles I seemed to have for a long time in this program came from my own thinking, when I thought I knew what I was doing and when I was convinced I knew something. It was only when I came to believe that I really didn’t know what I thought I knew that this program became simple and a whole lot easier. The proof is in the results.
Anyway, I couldn’t help but stop and think about this today. It makes me grateful.
