I had a dream last night. Strange. It started with this woman telling her story of how she got sober. She said she had been attending an alcoholic counseling center and had just about given up on it and sobriety. She was going out the door, when she saw a man she recognized entering the building. He was a well known singer and had been in combat with her son, who had lost his life.
She followed him into a meeting room, where he spoke to a group of alcoholics and told his story. He said that he had tried to get sober any number of times, but couldn’t put the drink down. One day he was standing on a street corner. He had just written a note and the wind took the note out of his hand and blew it across the street. He started after it, but the traffic was too heavy and he had to wait. Finally there was a break in the cars and he ran across the street after the note. He had seen it blow into a park and he followed it into a small stand of trees. He spotted the note among the shadows and as he bent down to pick it up he saw a man lying there.
Something familiar about the man made him bend down and he saw it was his old sargent, a man who had won the Silver Star for gallantry. The man was obviously dead drunk and unresponsive. He picked him up in his arms and got him to a nearby hospital, where the doctor told him that the man was in the last stages of alcoholism.
That did it for him. He went to AA that very day and hadn’t had a drink since. That was twenty years ago, he said. He also told them a story about a night he was singing in a club, when a fight broke out. Somehow he found himself involved. The next thing he knew he had picked a bottle up from the bar and was about to hit a man with it, when he realized what he was doing and put the bottle back. That was the first time he was aware of his anger. It made him go on with the steps and he said, when he was through them the first time that he was a changed man. He no longer wanted to drink and he was happy and content with his life for the first time.
After the meeting, the woman went up to him and told him who she was. The man said that he remembered her son. She told him how his story had impressed her and that she too would like to try to get sober. At that the man took her down the street to where there was a meeting and introduced her to the group.
If that was a “drunk dream”, it was different and a good one. More like a “sober dream”. Don’t know where it came from, but I thought I’d pass it along for what it’s worth.
