Restoration to sanity

Just how harmless that word complacent seems to be. Complacent. It almost sounds peaceful. Hardly!

Self satisfied to a fault and unconcerned. It’s so sneaky. A gradual state of mind, which comes over us almost unconsciously. I don’t think anyone of us ever notices it. Everything is going okay. Nice. No big problems. The program is working just fine. No thought of a drink. And, all of a sudden, bang!

If I’m lucky, fortunate is a better word, I snap out of it before it’s too late. Running into a brick wall isn’t so bad. A sudden downpour of problems can rescue us from ourselves. The struggle to get back on track can be good for someone like me. A wake up call. I’ve been snoozing.

At worse, complacency can lead us into a trap and to a drink. I’ve talked to people, who have fallen into this. I’ve heard of others, who have had the misfortune of becoming complacent. Losing touch with others. Like the definition, they had become unconcerned, after having been active before. Scary.

We were talking about the importance of meetings today. Meetings can turn out to be a pail of cold water in the face to wake us up. Self satisfaction with our lot in life can lull us into sleep walking. Walking right into a bar and seemingly not know that’s what’s happening. I’ve had a number of men tell me that story. Is it true?
I have no reason to doubt it.

If we are at least attending meetings on a regular basis, there’s a chance that someone will say something, which will open our mind and our ears. If nothing else, to remind us that nothing is worth a drink today.

Anyway, I was glad we talked about the importance of meetings and the Second Step. I always need to be restored to sanity each day. Good reminders.
