Oasis

In the midst of trouble and turmoil, which so plagues the world today. When our spirits are arid and so parched that we can’t find the words to pray or seek the help we need. When we’re so dispirited and can’t seem to find our center and the peace and serenity we once knew. When that spirit which uplifted us, when we found freedom from alcohol seems to have faded into the past. When we are overwhelmed by problems and tasks which seem to have invaded our whole life. Where do we find the rest and answers we so desperately need? We can go to a meeting.

Meetings are an oasis for those of us, who want to stay sober, in spite of what’s happening in our lives. They’re a place of rest, where we can once again gather our spirits and quench our thirst from the dryness within. We go there and find the burdens on our shoulders lifting for that hour. We can find a certain peace and a serenity pervading our being. We can hear the answer to our overcrowded minds. We can find a voice, beneath the voices in the meeting. Something beyond the words. It soothes and calms our fears and anxieties and prepares us for the rest of the day or allows us to get ready for the next.

At meetings we learn to put our own self centered problems on hold. We stop and listen to the troubles of another alcoholic. We find a way out of ourselves. Self pity begins to drift away. Resentments begin to seem so small. Anger begins to be of no consequence. And frustration fades, as we once again begin to learn to listen. We’ve found a mirror in which to see ourselves in another alcoholic.

I thought about this oasis in a world of alcohol today. I was at a meeting and saw the response in many who had brought their troubles and problems to this place. I was encouraged and filled with hope. And I got to talk to a man, who was very troubled. I know that I was helped and I hope he received the same help and hope that I did.

Anyway, that’s what I was thinking about at the meeting and now as I write this.
