What only I can do

We were talking about being sober and how important that is for people like us. Chronic alcoholics, as Dr. Silkworth and Dr. Carl Jung entitled us. We with this disease of alcoholism. But the bottom line was stated clearly by Dr. Jung to the young man in There Is A Solution.

It spelled that solution out so clearly. He was told the only hope he had was to have a spiritual experience. This from one of the greatest psychiatrists of that era. Later he was not alone. But he was then and the young man did exactly as he was told and then went on to the Oxford Group and through his friend Ebby T. passed this along to Bill W. And the door was open.

I know how it was for me, when I came in. I had already surrendered to the God of my understanding and was relieved of needing or wanting a drink of alcohol. A spiritual awakening of sorts. Then came to the program and through my sponsor read We Agnostics, which led me to a Higher Power and a spiritual way of life.

Later, after practicing this program and staying sober I was told to place myself as number one. That is to make sure I concentrated on the only thing I could do, and only I could do it. That was to stay sober a day at a time.

After that I was to share and be part of the groups and the people in this program. They would help me stay sober. But they couldn’t do for me what only I could do for myself. That was to stay sober.

And I am so grateful for what I have been given.
