What opened the door for me

Once again I was reminded of the Second Step by an old friend of mine. They were talking about it being the topic in a meeting just recently. Every time I hear anything on the Second Step my mind goes back to that moment, when my old sponsor had me open the BB and begin reading the Fourth Chapter. It changed my life.

Up to that time I really didn’t have a grasp of what this program was really about. It was that chapter which opened the door to this program. It was there that I was warned that not adapting to a spiritual life could very well lead to an alcoholic death. It was this chapter which led me to my Higher Power. And everything changed.

And probably what is so outstanding, as a result of this, was how it led to so many gifts I was given. Not just my sobriety, but the changes I definitely needed to bring into my life. My old way of living has been mostly erased, as long as I don’t let my negative emotions come back. I learned in here, as a result of this, that I needed to bring a positive attitude into my daily life. To depend on my Higher Power and those old timers to show me how to live.

None of this is about sainthood. It’s about being a sober alcoholic. A human being, subject to my imperfections. I know I’m not cured of this disease, that it will be with me right up to the end. So will the bumps in my road. I just need to pay attention and depend on my Higher Power. To have the faith and hope I have been given. And to also be willing to express love by helping others in here. To be willing to accept the help I need along the way.

Anyway, this is just another day in which I need to stay sober. A day in which I can once again express my gratitude for all I have been given.
