I was just thinking about why we’re here. Yesterday I had to go to the doctor’s. While there a nurse came in to do the preliminary work up. She asked me questions and was filling out the form while taking vitals. One of the questions she asked was did I drink. My answer was that I hadn’t drank in years. “Oh,” she said, “are you one of those AA guys?”. I said yes that I was one of those guys.
Her response was amazing. She said that she had tried AA and failed. Then she told me that she had a number of seizures as a result of drinking and trying to stop. She said her last seizure was in front of her father and she had to be hospitalized. She told me that she was humiliated by this happening in front of her father and that she was trying AA again, but that she didn’t like the meetings.
I knew we didn’t have much time, because the doctor would be in soon, so I shortened the message up.
I told her that one of these times she was going to die, unless she found a way to stop drinking. I told her what my sponsor told me. I told her she needed to get a sponsor and follow directions. Put the second step into action and nd a higher power to depend on.
She asked did I still go to meetings and I told her almost everyday.
On an odd day, when I am far away and out of town, I had an emergency and had to see the doctor. There I was in the office in a strange place and someone walked in and reminded me of why I am here. I could see the desperation on her face and hear it in her voice. All I had to do was to tell her I was in AA and she did the rest.
I was thinking today about how she was doing and hope she got some hope. I’ll probably never see her again, but I hope that something would kindle the fire within her to give her hope and to try again. Who knows? Maybe she will and she may try to do the same.
Anyway I was given a reminder of why we’re all here. Sometimes we have to take a chance and try.
