You know, if you would ask me who starred in such and such a movie, going way back, I probably could tell you. If you couldn’t remember an historical figure’s name, I probably would know it. My head, what I call my attic, is filled with a lot of useless junk. Trivia.
But there’s another kind of trivia we all have in our heads. It’s the little stuff, the irritants which sometimes fill our heads to the bursting point. A dog’s barking at night, our kids or other kids yelling and screaming around us or outdoors. Someone snubs us. Someone cuts oujr car off in traffic. We get caught in a traffic jam. The boss or our spouse or whoever nags at us. At the end of the week we can find ourselvfes unsettled, antsy, ready to jump out of our skin. And all because of what we might consider trivia.
Feeling like your ready to explode at any time? This is where the proverbial broken shoelace comes in. It’s not the climbing of the mountain which wears us down, it’s the pebble in our shoe. An old song comes to mind, “Little Things Mean a Lot”.
Well, Bill W. and the oldtimers who came up with the steps have a solution. It’s called the tenth step. Maybe we do it everyday or at least on a regular basis. But when we consider our day, do we remember to put those little irritants into the equation. Bill even tells us that we often can handle the “big” stuff, but it’s the little ants which seem invisible who gnaw away at us. These things can pile up day after day.
A good friend of mine and I were talking the other day and she reminded me of this trivia which had finally driven her to the wall. We just have to recognize what’s going on and do something about them, before they slip beneath the level of consciousness and out of sight only to bring about a volcanic eruption later.
Anyway, I have been thinking about what we talked about for a few days and can see where she was coming from. I know from experience what this stuff can do.
Just a thought. It has to do with my sobriety.
