The first three

Every now and then, I have to review those first three Steps. They’re the foundation of this life I’ve been privileged to live. My sobriety grew through these introductions into this way of life.

I was talking to a fairly new person in this program and we touched on these Steps and their importance. The beginning of a spiritual life for us. The fact that it is amazing that we’re both sober today and the influence of a higher power and the God of our understanding.

At the meeting tonight there were so many stories, which were so familiar. So similar. This spiritual awakening that brought us all into sobriety. It certainly was the type of revelation, which would hopefully awake any alcoholic seeking a way to get sober and stay sober.

I find, as I sit through meetings like this, that I find myself. I find that I’m in the right place and that I’m hearing what I need to hear. Afterward, talking to that new person, they said the same thing. It was almost like the meeting was aimed at them. I felt the same way.

It was a reminder to me that, when I find myself drifting and possibly heading in the wrong direction, that my safety is in remembering these three Steps. They’re the rock, the solid foundation on which I can stand and fend off the temptations this world presents, which could take me away from this life.

Anyway, when I got home tonight, I had to sit down and write about this. To fix in my mind why I came here and what it was that saved me and continues to keep me safe and sober.
