Today most of us at the Third Step meeting from the 12&12 were perfectly healthy with our sharing. Most of us went through the same stuff in dealing with this Step and everything leading up to it.
And that led some of us back to the First and Second, because back then we had thought we were responsible for getting sober and free from alcohol. And then one day a realization hit us that it wasn’t us, but our Higher Power. And when we reached the Step, which introduced us to the spiritual life and the Higher Power, a few of us were aware of the need to find a way to recognize how much help we would need to begin to change.
All this was because our alcoholic minds were governed by old negative emotions and thoughts. We learned from those old timers how much we needed to change. And they helped us to change our way of thinking and grow in our relationship with our Higher Power. And this is what led us to the Third Step and what we needed to do.
And finally, at the end of the Step 3, they cover the Serenity Prayer, which describes us. Our inability to be able to change anyone else and only ourselves. And the spiritual answer for the courage we need to change.
Anyway, I couldn’t help but remember how much help this Step was today for this alcoholic, and I know others. Makes me very grateful to my Higher Power and all those who have helped me over time.
