It’s that time of year again and hard to ignore. Christmas Eve.
I was thinking today and laughing at myself. Years ago, when I was newly sober, I spent a Christmas Eve, driving myself nuts, trying to get shopping and stuff out of the way. I drove from store to store. It was crazy with all the crowds. I had little patience back then and my temper was right at the breaking point.
Anyway, I spent the day that way, but was amazed at the smiles I received, At times a few laughs from those waiting on me. Late in the day I had to drive to my car dealer with a brake problem. I went in looking for trouble. They were just about to close, but instead smiled and took care of the car, despite the fact that they had already prepared to leave.
I was puzzled by the reception I had gotten all day. After all, everyone I met was greeted by a grim look from me and not a few growls. So, when I got home I stopped in front of a mirror and saw the cause of all those smiles. My fly was open all day. Still makes me laugh today.
So, my thoughts today are about my gratitude, that I was able to stay sober in spite of all my failings. And that gratitude is still with me today. This program saved me from drinking myself to death and gave me a new way of life. One that constantly reminds me that it was the greatest gift I have ever been given. One that is always with me each day I awake. I have to thank my higher power and so many people, who have helped me through the years and continue to so.
So to all I send my best wishes for a sober and very happy day.
