I was thinking about an analogy today on recovery. My recovery from alcoholism.
What the analogy was about was the word “recover” or “recovered”. I pictured me as a beat up old chair. Stuffing, springs, cushions, everything, torn and hanging out all over the place. That was me, when I came in. Physically, mentally, and spiritually, all torn up and wrecked.
Then I came into the program and just like a piece of old furniture in a place of restoration, I was put back together and literally reupholstered, recovered. New springs (my spirit), new stuffing (mental), and new covering (physical). My sponsor and all those old timers the craftsmen. They literally put me back together and restored me, under the direction of my higher power.
Crazy thinking, I know. But it fits me. Being put back together a step at a time. Piece by piece. My wounded, broken soul made whole again in the spiritual awakening. My crazy, insane mind, settled down and, probably for the first time, cushioned against the blows from within and without. And physically healed against the odds.
One thing I know is that this recovered condition is not permanent. I’m not cured. My disease is progressive. It’s still going on down within out of sight. I know, if I’m insane enough to pick up a drink, I’ll be where I would have been, if I had continued to drink. Fatal.
But this much I know, if I do this just a day at a time. To continue to try to practice these Steps, my whole being is still in recovery. I don’t have to drink and I won’t.
All this is due to the program and the foundation is as solid as a great rock. It’s spiritual. My higher power and the people in this program keep me on track.
Just thinking about recovery.
