Simple philosophy

I was reminded last night of that famous philosopher Dirty Harry. So much wisdom from a man with a .350 magnum. He once said, “A man’s gotta know his limitations”. Now there’s something I needed to hear.

You can bet that was a real problem for me, when I was drinking. Failure to know my limitations got me into a world of trouble. For the most part, I recognize my limitations. For the most part. But, every once in a while I forget.

Why are Dirty Harry’s words so important? Because a failure to remember my limitations just might lead to a drink. A friend of mine pointed out today that, if he forgot what his character defects were and didn’t take time to attend to them, that’s when he would be in the greatest danger of taking a drink again. Particularly anger and resentments.

When I find myself back into self reliance and going it alone on my own unaided strength, I’m pushing the envelope. I’m nearing the edge. Once again, self will run riot, even though I may not think so.

I got an email from an dear friend today, reminding me of the God of my understanding and the power of prayer. I need to be reminded of these things daily. I am grateful for others, who take the time to help me along this path we’re all on. A reminder that I have my limitations and not to go it alone.
