The open door

Came to believe. The Second Step. And what is it that most of us believe and in which we have faith? What is it that, when we work these Twelve Steps, brings about the spiritual awakening we seek? The restoration to sanity and a sober life?

We were talking about that today. And it reminded me of color. For instance the color red. One person might perceive it as a flame so bright that it hurts their eyes. Another might see it as almost pink. Still one person might have something almost purple. And then there are others, who are color blind.

The BB reminds us that it is up to the individual to find what makes sense to them. We are not here to preach or teach what it is that we believe to the newcomer. Everyone has to find what it is that works for them.

The spiritual life, the foundation of this program and the Steps, is what it is that keeps me sober. What changed me into the person I am today. I might talk about my higher power or the God of my understanding, but that’s as far as it goes. It’s personal to me, as it is to everyone, who are on this path to living a sober life. I must be tolerant and respect the thoughts of others in this regard.

The truth for me is that it’s my higher power, who has brought me to this day in my sobriety. That despite my imperfections, or how I apply this program to my daily life. It’s what has empowered me to live my life a day at a time.

When I read what Dr. Carl Jung said to the young man that, if he wanted to stay sober, he was going to have to seek a spiritual experience. But he also told him that his attention to his religious convictions were not enough. He was going to have to go further, if he was to have what was necessary for a vital spiritual experience. He had that experience and lived a sober life. I was fortunate to come into a program, which had already laid out for me the process, which would enable me to achieve the same results.

Anyway, after the meeting I came home and thought about the Second Step and came to believe. I’m grateful that this program has worked for me. I need to thank my higher power and the men and women, who opened the door for me to the spiritual solution this program offers every alcoholic, who wants to get sober.
