Last night I was talking on the phone with a man, who is trying to get this program. He told me he had just finished the BB. “Finished!”, I thought. I’ve never finished the BB. In so many words, I told him to read it again.
It was a clumsy conversation. I think he’s a man, who is not comfortable with himself. There were long pauses. I steered him into the thought of commitment. Jumping into the pool. I told him the water was fine and others would support him through this early period of sobriety. But, I could still hear the hesitation in his voice.
Finally, he told me what impressed him most at the meetings we’ve been attending lately. He said that someone said to take a look at the person next to you. The man said, “You’re looking at a miracle”. He said he turned and looked and felt he really was looking at a miracle. What he said he was looking at was the evidence that this program works.
After we hung up, I thought about him and the conversation we just had. He’s already realized that he has been drinking against his own will. I sure could identify with that. But he said the call of alcohol is still strong in him.
I had told him to pray and ask God to help him not to take that next drink.
Indeed that’s a prayer for us all.
But, what gave me hope with this man, was his new vision. He had looked at the man next to him and saw a miracle. It made me hope that this miracle would come to pass with him.
Anyway, I was thinking about him this morning and what he had said. We, who are sober, are all miracles. I need to see that in others and myself.
