Other people

Among other things I think about are other people. The reason I go there is that here we are trying to live a spiritual life. Spirituality, the life blood of our sobriety. As has been said, it’s our spiritual condition that determines our sobriety.

But, we aren’t the only ones, who live a spiritual life. I can think of so many, who are great examples to me. Men and women, who probably are doing much the same thing we’re doing. I can’t really say how, but their lives are demonstrations to me that the this way of life really works.

I was thinking about one of these people last night, as I was reading a book by another spiritual example, and he quoted something this other man had said. The man was once the Secretary General of the United Nations, who was possibly assassinated. But, while no one knew it, he was very quietly and in a very dedicated way, living a deeply spiritual life. His name was Dag Hammarskjold.

I’ve read much about this man and admire him greatly. The quote went something like this. For all that has happened, Thanks. For all that will happen, Yes. (Not accurate, but it was what he was thinking.)

What I was thinking, when I read that, is how much I agree. Looking back at my life, with all that happened in my drinking, and all that has happened in my sobriety, I can only echo his words. To my Higher Power, I have to say thanks. It reminded me of a prayer one of my AA friends. Thank You for all you have given me. Thank You for all you have taken from me. And thank You for all you have left me. Ditto for me.

And the future? If I’m practicing these 12 Steps, of course, Yes. It says to seek and do the will of the God of our understanding. I don’t know anyone, who knows what God’s will is. All I know is what has happened in my life, seems to be just that. None of us knows what’s ahead of us. I sure haven’t a clue. But whatever it is, as long as I try, attempt, to live this way of life, dedicated to staying sober, I believe I’m doing God’s will. Imperfectly, of course, knowing myself.

Anyway I was thinking of people I know are living, or have led, spiritual lives. They are examples for me. Inspirations. But I’m not ignoring those I have known in these rooms. I have seen that in this program and have been inspired by their examples.

Just thinking about sobriety and staying sober.
