Today I got a reminder about something I don’t often stop and think about. And that was helping others like myself to grow and stay sober. I mean I know I do think that’s what we’re supposed to do, but I rarely stop and think I’m good enough to be able to help others. Funny that isn’t in my thoughts.
Anyway a couple of people talking to me got me to stop and go back and think about this. It kind of made me almost want to say it wasn’t true. But they were kind enough to remind me of those who had benefits, like I got, when I was helped by people in here. And there are times I do go back and try to think about that man in the program, who told my friend, who drank with me, that there was a place we could go and stay sober. I never met him or knew anything about him, but what he told my friend saved me from not only committing suicide and gave me hope, which helped me to pray and ask God for help. And I got that help and haven’t had a drink since that moment.
I look back at my old sponsor and his helpful widow, who stuck with me through the years, and helped me. I know that she did the same for so many like myself. They had the talent to help us all change and stay sober. I can never forget the directions and the help they gave to me and so many others. We’re all still sober. They both have passed on, but I know how much we owe them. We still stick together and help one another by reminding each other what we need to know to continue to stay sober a day at a time.
Anyway I had to stop and think about what was said. I know it did one thing for me. It made me step aside and feel humbled by their thoughts. I’m sure a lot of others probably feel the same way I do. The need to step back and feel like someone knocked the breath out of me. I’m not all that used to things like this.
I mean I know what my sponsor and those old timers taught me about being able to freely give what was freely given to me. Often I’m so grateful for all of that. But I’m just grateful that I’m still sober a day at a time. Just like I learned in here. I need to just be quiet and thank my Higher Power, this program, and all those, who have helped me throughout all of this time.
I hate talking about this, but something told me that maybe I should share this with others and remind them of what it is we need to do in here. Hopefully they aren’t as dumb as I feel.
