What has worked and changed me

Once again I was reminded of something, which helped me so much in here. And that was the poem written by Robert Frost entitled The Road Not Taken. I have never forgotten that, because it meant so much to my coming into this program and getting sober. I have never forgotten that last line, which tells me all about this program. What it has meant to me and so many others.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all of the difference.

The road I was on was alcoholism. I was ready to commit suicide because I was in such despair from my being unable to stop drinking. And that’s when a friend of mine gave me hope. That hope led to me praying to the God of my understanding. I totally gave up alcohol. I surrendered one hundred percent. And I became willing to change my whole life. Up to this point I knew nothing about AA. I also knew nothing about alcoholism.

I never drank ever again. I came to this program five days later and was introduced to this program. I had gotten off the road I and so many others like myself were on. Now I was on the road “less traveled”. And it definitely has made all the difference.

Amazingly I have seen so many alcoholics like myself, who have come to AA and never stay on this road. They go back out and continue drinking and end up like so many alcoholics I have known. They drink and then they eventually die. Some very quickly and others, who suffer so much and go downhill. And that’s why I was able to identify with Frost’s poem. I got off the road of practicing drinking alcohol, and took the one less traveled by. Fewer true alcoholics are in this program and on this road. The majority are on the road out there, which costs them, like it was costing me back then.

I am, like I always say, truly grateful for all I have been given by my Higher Power, and this program, and the people in here. I learned all I have to do is to stay sober a day at a time. Peace and happiness, restoration to sanity, and the spiritual awakening, and so much more I have found in here. Thanks so much.
