Talked to several long time sober alcoholics for a while. And today was one of those where we shared the same things with one another. One of those was how and why we are sober and what it is we need to do a day at a time in here.
That led us to the point where we all agreed that we needed to turn our will and our lives over to our Higher Power. It also helped us to do the best we can to get out of the way and not try to control anything. We’re here to do what it is we need to do in order to not just stay sober, but to help practice, not just the Steps, but the Traditions. We’re here, we know, to unite and not control, but to practice this program where we can help one another to stay sober and help keep these groups united.
We all laughed, when we admitted how important humor is to us. All agreed that we need to be able to tell how our lives were seriously into alcohol and how destructive it was for us, but to demonstrate how we have changed. No longer living in the past. That means to me, and them also, that we are no longer weighed down with what led us here. Peace and happiness are now a big part of our lives today, as opposed to our lives in alcohol. Hopefully we have stepped away from our negative emotions running our lives. And how important it is for us to be in a positive attitude rather than a negative one.
We did talk about how important it is for us to learn why we are here each and everyday. I know, as did they, how it was very important for us to have very strong sponsors, who were experienced and able to teach us what we needed to know. They helped us ot change and begin to lead a new way of life. I know I have never forgotten what my sponsor taught me how to live this new way of living a sober life in here. It totally changed me, as it did the others I was talking to.
We talked about prayer and meditation. There was no bragging. None of us believed we were personally very spiritual.
However we all admitted we had to strive to do what we found in here and to be grateful and thankful for what we have been given by our Higher Power and those, who have helped us to live and practice this program one day at a time. I just thought I’d stop and think about this.
