An excuse

I just finished watching a college lacrosse game and the announcer said something which caught my attention. Two of the players got thrown out of the game for fighting. The announcer said that they lost their poise, because they gave into their emotions. He said they were only human.

That made me think about what’s going on in the world around us. Great unrest. We all face so many problems. And that’s the problem. It is so easy to get caught up in all that’s going on every day. How I and so many others can forget about our primary purpose. Our character defects. Our emotions.

One of the things that can be so easily lost in all of this is what this program is all about. Our spirituality or our need to live a spiritual life. After all, we’re told that we have to live a spiritual life or die an alcoholic death.

Life is difficult. It can be less difficult, if I accept that it is difficult. If I remember not to get caught up in all of the stuff that is going on around me. Like my sponsor told me, not to get caught up in the news. He told me that was for normal people and that I wasn’t normal. He was so full of compliments at times.

But his directions were so important to my living a sober life. If I will but pay attention and not allow myself to suffer from distractions. Not an easy thing for me to do. But that’s the point, isn’t it? To continually dedicate myself to paying attention to these spiritual principles. Not easy for anyone today. But, if I remember it’s only a day at a time, the task becomes easier.

Anyway, hearing that remark by the game announcer reminded me of what it is I’m supposed to do. I’m only human is true, but it can become an excuse, which could lead to disaster. A reminder of how much I need others and the God of my understanding.
